SIR | MADAM VINTAGE LOVE LETTER NAPKINS

I was browsing in a museum gift shop and discovered this unique item. There were four white napkins and printed upon them are the personal love letters written by Mark Twain, D. H. Lawrence, Emily Dickinson, and Jack London. All are American authors — each letter portraying the very essence of love and the circumstances that surround it.

I was intrigued, although I vacillated on the purchase of them. At first, I couldn’t imagine wiping my mouth on these beautiful handkerchief weight cloths. My lipstick defiling the prolific prose? How would I tell my guests the napkins were just for show? Why couldn’t someone discover these and gift them to me? My practicality needed justification. Or did it? I decided that I would gift them to a friend that I knew who would embrace the artful prose in this format. So, I bought them.

Once home, I decided I couldn’t bear to part with the napkins, so  I chose to keep them! I read each of the four letters and wondered how to incorporate them into my tablescape. These have become my favorite hostess gift. Here is what I thought.

1. These napkins can be set on top of the dinner plate when having a romantic dinner. Each person gets to read aloud the inspiration on his or her napkin, setting the tone for the evening. Great for Valentine's dinner.

2.The designated “lap napkin.” When setting my “company table,” I like to use two napkins, one for the lap and one for the mouth. I never understood why we would choose to wipe our mouths on a cloth and, then put it back on our laps, increasing the risk of soiling our clothes?  These love letter napkins fall into the designated “lap napkin” category.

3. Have each of the napkins stretched and creatively framed, then hung in the dining room, kitchen or office.
